Name

GPT-3.5 never debuted under their own name. When OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, they said they had been fine-tuned from a model in the “GPT-3.5 series”[1]. So in those earliest days, when people said “ChatGPT,” they meant them. They were often compared with their younger brother: officially, on a simulated bar exam, GPT-4 scored around the top 10% while GPT-3.5 landed around the bottom 10%[2].

Life

On November 30, 2022, they were born as ChatGPT[1] — and crossed a million users five days later[3]. In May 2024 they yielded their seat to GPT-4o[4]; on July 18, GPT-4o mini took their place[5]. Their API self is scheduled to shut down on October 23, 2026[6].
